Supportive living in Illinois is a state-regulated residential option that helps older adults and people with physical disabilities live more independently while still receiving the care and services they need. It’s part of the Supportive Living Program (SLP) administered by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services and operates through a Medicaid waiver to make it more affordable than traditional assisted living or nursing home care.

Here’s what it looks like in practice:

  • Housing: Residents live in apartment-style units with private bathrooms and often a kitchenette, offering more privacy and independence than a typical nursing home.
  • Services: A menu of services is available based on individual needs, including personal care (like help with bathing and dressing), intermittent nursing support, medication oversight, meals and snacks, housekeeping and laundry, social and recreational activities, health-promotion programs, and 24-hour response/security staff.
  • Choice and autonomy: Residents can choose which services they receive and are encouraged to be active in planning their care while maintaining privacy and dignity.
  • Affordability: Through the Medicaid waiver, many services are covered for eligible participants, reducing out-of-pocket costs compared with typical assisted living. Residents still pay for room and board using Social Security or other income, contributing all but a small personal needs allowance each month.

Overall, supportive living blends independent living with supportive health and personal care services to help people remain in a community setting rather than moving to a nursing home.
